Mental Tip

Stress is something that each of us deal with in some form or fashion. Individuals experience stress differently and are affected by stress differently. So, what is stress?

Stress: “A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.” (Lexico by Oxford)

The “adverse or demanding circumstances” is up to the individual’s personal interpretation. Some may feel a circumstance is more adverse than another, although that does not discredit the affect it has. It’s no secret that Law Enforcement Professionals are exposed to stress, this can be a result of a heavy workload, a stressful incident, or just stress associated with perceived performance expectations.

Now, take the stress associated with the job and combine it with the stress of life. The added stress of life, whether it be social, financial, or relational can greatly increase pressure. This can lead to distraction, poor job performance, unhealthy eating and /or drinking habits, uncharacteristic emotional responses, and strained relationship. Some stress can be managed with various techniques, while others require more in depth resources.

Here are a few potential stress management tips (Conroy, 2019):

·      Adequate sleep

·      Physical Exercise

·      Talk about it

·      Better Time Management

·      Express your feelings

·      Reframe Problem

·      Avoid unnecessary stress

While using the tips listed can have great benefit, it cannot outweigh the importance of investing into a healthy, active, and maturing spiritual life. This does not mean that one will not face stressful circumstances, but it will better equip one to maintain a clear mindset and positive perspective in the midst of struggles.

Philippians 4:8-9(ESV)-

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned[e] and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
