Renew Your Mind

Renew Your Mind

Can we actually reframe/renew our minds? Does the way we think really make a difference? The short answer is yes. The way in which we think has a significant impact on our overall wellbeing. If your “normal” thought process or attitude is mostly negative, you will stifle the ability for your brain to heal and grow after an adversity. But, changing your perspective or the way you see the adversity in a more positive connotation helps build upon your overall resilience. This is referred to as neuroplasticity. What is neuroplasticity? Neuroplasticity is “the capacity of the nervous system to develop new neuronal connections” (Dictionary.com, 2023). The actual reframing/renewing of your mind.

There is a notion that reframing one’s mind is a relatively new concept, although it really is not. Romans 12:2 states, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” First, Paul is instructing to “not be conformed to this world,” or in other words, not allow the world to be the influencing factor in our attitudes. Second, Paul continues to encourage us to be “transformed by the renewal of your mind,” in essence, create new neuronal pathways to have a more positive perspective or outlook. Lastly, Paul reminds that this allows us the ability to discern or distinguish what is “good and acceptable” in our lives for the glory of God.

How do you renew your mind? Here are some suggestions:

  •  Daily Devotions (read scripture, prayer, & journaling)

  • Educate yourself with new ways to deal/cope with adversity (proven courses or instructional books)

  • Start your day with a positive note (encourage a friend or a family member)

  • Unplug (get off social media, entertainment, media sources or other avenues that feed negativity)

  • Build or strengthen your support network (family, friends, or church family)

It can be difficult to start something new, but start somewhere. Start small and build from there, do not stay stagnate. Make use of resources, do not quit.
